starting up a new 4-H club, horses,lambs & turkeys
Starting My own 4-H club for my Children We decided that My daughter and grandkids needed their own 4-H club. My daughter has been active in 4-H since 2000 and has been very successful. She was fortunate enough to have as her first leader and lady (Cari) that believes in participation of all the activities. So Amanda was encouraged to do the 4-H log books, the Judging, and all the yearly activites. She went to summer camp, went to State each year with one to three of her horses and this last December she went to the National Judging contest in Denver Colorado. That was a special experience for her. Once in a lifetime. Since this is our daughters last year in 4-H as she is graduating from High School this spring, I will just have the 2 small grandchildren 6 years and 9 years, so for economy sake we have decided to begin our own club on this side of the valley. Easier on the fuel bill and travel time. No Problem, Easy Right? Wrong... First you have to go to the extention office and buy all the various books the kids will need. A name needs picked out that will not be project specific. My kids like to do lambs, Turkey, Photography as well as their horses. So great care goes into selection of a cute name the kids can enjoy, be proud of and yet depict the scope of 4-H without limitations. We buy all the books, and break the bank. We create a name the kids like. Barbwire Creek 4-H club. Then there is a small matter of the team color's, shirts, flags, logo and stall front decorations for Fair time in July. How hard can that be? Huh! Tough, especially on a small budget. We found companies that would set us up, thats the operative words, for a small fee of $250.00 with a min amount of shirts bought. How many shirts can three or four kids wear? Not 25, that I am sure of. Finally a friend sent us to a delightful man that would not only help us with shirts (with no min.) but had the books for the colors we could select and the thread colors for contrast. Thank you Kelly. He contacted a man that will do the art work on the logo, give the logo to the man with the shirts and he will add the logo and kids names to them. Under $70.00. So the kids then had to come up with Shirt & logo colors. Dark Green and Gold it is.... o.k. So the shirts are cover'd the logo is in the works and he gave us the name of a man that could do the flag. A friend will help with the stall fronts and its a go.... Lambs come in this week end, Horses are being riden and worked in prep for the summers fair. Let me express my gratitude for all those leaders out there that take this seriously and have the dedication to make 4-H clubs not just a meeting to attend, but a true learning experience. We were fortunate to learn from one of those and hope we can emulate her teaching in our new club. For those considering this adventure, know its not just done in the blink of an eye, nor should it be taken lightly, as what we do in these clubs affect our children the rest of their lives.
